Included in this volume is my short story, "Croak," another tale featuring my Sardis County characters. Here is an excerpt that one of the editors, Deborah Cullins Smith, shared online recently:</p><div dir="auto" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; font-family: Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;">“You know, you could be a gentleman and offer to rub some sunscreen on my back and <span style="font-family: inherit;"><a style="color: #385898; cursor: pointer; font-family: inherit;" tabindex="-1"></a></span>shoulders while I’m over here trying to catch our supper.”</div><div dir="auto" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; font-family: Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></div><div dir="auto" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; font-family: Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;">Obediently I grabbed the tube from her bag. “So you think you’re gonna outfish me?”</div><div dir="auto" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; font-family: Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></div><div dir="auto" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; font-family: Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;">“I think right now you ain’t doing much but staring.” She had a big smile, clearly enjoying putting me on the spot. I’m sure her eyes were teasing me behind those aviators. “You gotta put a hook in the water before you can catch anything, don’t you know that?” </div><div dir="auto" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; font-family: Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></div><div dir="auto" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; font-family: Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;"> As I rubbed the sunscreen on her, the boat rocked again, violently. Staci lost her footing and stumbled backwards into me, which I guess would be the fishing equivalent of having your girl jump into your arms in the middle of a horror movie—as in, I didn’t mind. Neither did she, apparently; she didn’t pull away from me. In fact, she snuggled up to me, and I didn’t mind that either.</div><div dir="auto" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; font-family: Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></div><div dir="auto" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; font-family: Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;">“See what I mean, Dane? And it’s huge!”</div><div dir="auto" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; font-family: Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></div><div dir="auto" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; font-family: Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;">“Before I can even get a hook in the water! The fish yanked her forward, and I instinctively threw my arms around her waist to catch her and keep her in the boat. However, the force pulling against her, against me, kept me from enjoying the touch. It threatened to overpower me, and I’m not a small fry. </div><div dir="auto" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; font-family: Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></div><div dir="auto" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; font-family: Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;">“You don’t get to win!” Staci growled as she reeled and pulled back on the rod with all her might. “I ain’t letting you…”</div><div dir="auto" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; font-family: Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></div><div dir="auto" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; font-family: Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;">SNAP! Suddenly her rod broke in two under the strain. I don’t go cheap on my fishing equipment. Unless she had somehow managed to hook Jaws, that rod should have held up. So what was on the other end of that line? </div><div dir="auto" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; font-family: Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></div><div dir="auto" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; font-family: Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;">Something burst out of the water, springing about twenty feet into the air. It was a frog—or at least, it looked like a frog, but of gargantuan proportions. Had Staci not screamed, I might have thought my eyes were playing tricks on me. </div><div dir="auto" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; font-family: Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></div><div dir="auto" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; font-family: Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;">It fell back into the water with such a huge splash that we were both soaked. Suddenly the boat started to tilt. The frog had clipped the bow as it fell, breaking off a chunk of it, and now we were quickly taking on water. Sinking.</div><div dir="auto" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; font-family: Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></div><div dir="auto" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; font-family: Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;">Staci grabbed my hand. “We’ve gotta swim for it!”</div><div dir="auto" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; font-family: Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></div><div dir="auto" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; font-family: Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;">The thought of getting into the same water as that giant frog wasn’t exactly appealing, nor was losing all my high-dollar fishing equipment. Still, my mom hadn’t raised any idiots. Taking each other’s hand, we jumped feet first into the murky lake water.</div><div dir="auto" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; font-family: Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></div><div dir="auto" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; font-size: 15px; text-align: center; white-space: pre-wrap;">#</div><div dir="auto" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; font-size: 15px; text-align: center; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></div><div dir="auto" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; font-size: 15px; text-align: left; white-space: pre-wrap;">Don't Go in the Water is available from Amazon in both <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Dont-Water-Classic-Monsters-Anthology/dp/1961129272/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1VAJ0FZMHVXZI&keywords=don%27t+go+in+the+water+anthology&qid=1697622855&sprefix=don%27t+go+in+the+water%2Caps%2C262&sr=8-1" target="_blank">print</a> and <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Dont-Water-Classic-Monsters-Anthology-ebook/dp/B0CJN8ZMWJ/ref=sr_1_1?crid=HPQ66NC25XTT&keywords=don%27t+go+in+the+water+anthology+kindle&qid=1697622995&sprefix=don%27t+go+in+the+water+anthology+kindle%2Caps%2C107&sr=8-1" target="_blank">ebook</a> formats. Chaos erupted all around me, partially because of me, but of course I couldn’t see it. Thanks to our captors, I hadn’t been able to see anything in weeks. I could hear it, though--from the panicked shouts of the guards to the crackling of the flames to the whistling of the projectiles I hurled through the air.</span></div><div class="bi6gxh9e" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; font-family: Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 8px;"><span class="d2edcug0 hpfvmrgz qv66sw1b c1et5uql b0tq1wua jq4qci2q a3bd9o3v b1v8xokw oo9gr5id" style="color: var(--primary-text); font-family: inherit; font-size: 0.9375rem; line-height: 1.3333; max-width: 100%; min-width: 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word; word-break: break-word;">All the experiments we had suffered through had endowed each of us with a superhuman ability at the cost of a disability. Some combinations had no bearing on each other. Villanueva had acromegaly now, but that didn’t impede his newfound power of firestarting.</span></div><div class="bi6gxh9e" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; font-family: Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 8px;"><span class="d2edcug0 hpfvmrgz qv66sw1b c1et5uql b0tq1wua jq4qci2q a3bd9o3v b1v8xokw oo9gr5id" style="color: var(--primary-text); font-family: inherit; font-size: 0.9375rem; line-height: 1.3333; max-width: 100%; min-width: 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word; word-break: break-word;">Unfortunately for me, blindness and telekinesis didn’t mix well. My other four senses were heightened, but that only helped so much. There were a lot of metal objects around me--I could tell by a certain smell I had never noticed when I was still sighted--so I knew I had plenty of stuff to throw. By my amplified hearing, I could also distinguish and pinpoint the voices of my comrades and our enemies, helping me aim my makeshift missiles.</span></div><div class="bi6gxh9e" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; font-family: Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 8px;"><span class="d2edcug0 hpfvmrgz qv66sw1b c1et5uql b0tq1wua jq4qci2q a3bd9o3v b1v8xokw oo9gr5id" style="color: var(--primary-text); font-family: inherit; font-size: 0.9375rem; line-height: 1.3333; max-width: 100%; min-width: 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word; word-break: break-word;">Unfortunately, I couldn’t see what I was throwing, nor could I see what anybody else was doing. This is the same excerpt that the editors are currently using on Facebook to promote the anthology.</p><p style="text-align: center;">#</p><p><i>The man smiled amicably at her as she got out of the car. He had an air of expectation about him, reminding her of the instructions she had received.</i></p><p><i>"Are the fish biting?" she asked. It was a strange question, given that the pond was a hundred yards away and kids were splashing around, no doubt scaring off the fish. Nevertheless, she stuck to the script.</i></p><p><i>The man nodded. "They're always biting if you use the right bait."</i></p><p><i>It was the response that she had been told to expect, but that didn't help her nerves much. "Are you Mr. Marsh?" Assuming that's your real name.</i></p><p><i>"That's right. And you must be Ms. Holden?"</i></p><p><i>"Please, call me Amy."</i></p><p><i>"If you don't mind, Ms. Holden, I like to keep things businesslike...."</i></p><p><i>"Please, I'm nervous enough."</i></p><p><i>"Very well. Have a seat, Amy." He opened the cooler and fished out a store-brand grape soda with his good arm. "Thirsty?"</i></p><p><i>"Um, not really. I'm trying to cut back on sugar..."</i></p><p><i>"Bottled water?"</i></p><p><i>Amy nodded. The heat was already getting to her, and she knew it would only get worse. "Actually, I would like one of those. Thank you."</i></p><p><i>"So let's get right down to it, Amy. We're meeting because you want somebody to die."</i></p><p><i>Amy flinched. His directness seemed particularly jarring in contrast to the otherwise idyllic campground. She looked around nervously to see if anyone else had heard him. Everyone at the pond was seemingly oblivious to them. "Well, I..."</i></p><p><i>His half-smile was surprisingly sympathetic as he leaned back in his chair. "Please forgive me. I get so used to this that I forget how extreme it is for everybody else. What I mean to say is, somebody had wronged you, you want justice, and the law can't touch them for whatever reason."</i></p><p><i>A bird chirped in the background as Amy fidgeted in her seat. Kids were splashing in the water, shouting and laughing. Everything else in the world was normal except for their meeting. "Yes, sir."</i></p><p><i>"Why don't you tell me about it?"</i></p><p><i>"Do you really think you can help me?"</i></p><p><i>Marsh smiled and held up his left hand, then lowered it. When he brought it up again, it was covered with fur and had razor sharp claws at the ends of his fingers. Amy gasped in spite of herself. He repeated the prestidigitation and held up his hand again, normal once more. "Let's just say I have a rather unique skill set."</i></p><p style="text-align: center;"><i>#</i></p><p style="text-align: left;">"Moonlight and Claws" is available in both print and e-book format on October 15. If they like the sample, they can "rent" the rest of the story for $0.99, or they can buy it outright for $1.99. New chapters appear in the app daily.</div><div><br /></div><div>The app features stories from a number of talented authors. It has been my privilege to contribute three stories to Faith Journeys: "Barabbas: A Thief Set Free," "Samson: A Man of Potential," and "Zacchaeus: A Man Named Pure." It includes my short story, "Skin Deep," which has to do with a missing beauty queen and a very unusual mirror. Here's an excerpt: </span></p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: georgia;">#</span></p><div class="o9v6fnle cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x c1et5uql ii04i59q" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; margin: 0.5em 0px 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word; white-space: pre-wrap;"><div dir="auto"><span style="font-family: georgia;">Looking up, I noticed that the person on the roof was a female. A female who might have given the Bride of Frankenstein a run for her money, but female nevertheless. Her legs were crouched as if she had thoughts of jumping off the roof but scared of how she might land.</span></div></div><div class="o9v6fnle cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x c1et5uql ii04i59q" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; margin: 0.5em 0px 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word; white-space: pre-wrap;"><div dir="auto"><span style="font-family: georgia;">Was that what we heard on the roof? Or what I saw out of the corner of my eye?</span></div></div><div class="o9v6fnle cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x c1et5uql ii04i59q" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; margin: 0.5em 0px 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word; white-space: pre-wrap;"><div dir="auto"><span style="font-family: georgia;">Then she looked at me. Even in her distorted features, I read a reaction of horror. She screamed and ran toward the other end of the roof. A big oak tree was on that side of the house, with one limb ending just a few feet away. She took a running jump and barely grabbed the limb in time to avoid disaster.</span></div></div><div class="o9v6fnle cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x c1et5uql ii04i59q" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; margin: 0.5em 0px 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word; white-space: pre-wrap;"><div dir="auto"><span style="font-family: georgia;">A squirrel or a cat might do that, look as if they were about to fall, and then still be able to recover and scamper up into the tree. Unfortunately for her, she weighed more than any squirrel or cat. The branch snapped immediately, sending her to the ground with a wail and a thud.</span></div></div><div class="o9v6fnle cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x c1et5uql ii04i59q" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; margin: 0.5em 0px 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word; white-space: pre-wrap;"><div dir="auto"><span style="font-family: georgia;">“Dispatch! A bad sprain, maybe a fracture. Either way, she was in pain and making no effort to put any weight on that leg. For the first time, I got a good look at her face. Her nose was like that of a pig, one eye was bigger than the other, and her teeth had a sickening black tint. That grayish skin looked more like scales on closer examination.</span></div></div><div class="o9v6fnle cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x c1et5uql ii04i59q" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; margin: 0.5em 0px 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word; white-space: pre-wrap;"><div dir="auto"><span style="font-family: georgia;">However, what really caught my eye was the mole on her left cheek. It would have been the 99th birthday of my late grandmother (and Tinnie Press namesake) Tinnie Setzer, who played a large part in cultivating my love for the mystery/suspense genre.
