NOW AVAILABLE: "Tales from the Forest" anthology

As of 5/1/2024, Ye Olde Dragon Books has released their fourth fairytale anthology, "Tales from the Forest," based on the tale of Little Red Riding Hood. It is my privilege and my pleasure to report that it includes my short story "The Night of the Mindbender." It is the latest of my Sardis County stories. Here's an excerpt:

“Take cover!” Ritch shouted as he dove for the ground. A shot rang out as his face hit the dirt. He couldn’t hear the bullet strike anything, but he sensed it had come too close for comfort.

The rider was turning for another pass. Who was under that helmet? Maybe it was somebody connected with Janus Labs—one of Dr. Lockhart’s lackeys, out here to avenge either Boyle’s liberation or Huey’s death or both. Or it could have been someone connected to one of his own hits, a relative who had tracked him down and was here to serve as a blood avenger.

Does it matter? One can kill me just as dead as another…

“Ritch! What’s going on?” Boyle shouted from the RV window.

“Stay in there and protect Mrs. Dell!”

The rider charged forward again. Still in a prone position, Ritch rolled aside, trying to distance himself from the RV. He didn’t want a stray bullet to find Boyle or Mrs. Dell. Especially not her—she was the brains of their operation.

Gravel pelted Ritch as the rider darted past. Another gunshot pierced the air, again sounding as if it had sailed wide of its mark. Why does she only shoot while she’s moving? Ritch wondered. Why not just sit still and aim?

Seconds later, she slowed to turn around once more. Despite the cloud of dust, the red of her outfit was clearly visible. Red like blood.

“Bring it, Little Red Riding Hood,” Ritch growled. “Come on and see what big teeth I have.”

While Ritch’s transformations were somewhat easier during a full moon, they had never fully hinged on the lunar cycle. The moon was waxing gibbous tonight, but it made no difference. Ritch only had to concentrate for a second or two before the fur, fangs, and claws appeared. His shirt ripped, but his pants remained intact. When he was making a hit, he usually liked to have something with his mark’s scent, but in this case it wasn’t necessary. The rider’s scent already permeated the air.

Wait for it…

As Hood swooped in close, the wolf pounced. The impact toppled the motorcycle and sent both Hood and Ritch sprawling. He recovered quickly, looking around.
